Introduction
The MEXT Scholarship (Monbukagakusho Scholarship) is Japan's flagship government-funded scholarship program, run by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Since 1954, the program has awarded scholarships to international students from more than 160 countries and regions.
What Does the MEXT Scholarship Cover? (Full Benefits Explained)
The MEXT Scholarship covers much more than just tuition fees. Let’s check out what more it has to offer.
Full Tuition Fee Exemption: Covers entrance examination fees (where applicable), admission fees, and tuition fees charged by Japanese universities.
Monthly Stipend (Living Allowance): A monthly stipend is provided to help cover living expenses such as accommodation, food, transportation, and study materials. The amount depends on the scholarship category and may be revised annually by MEXT.
Round-Trip Airfare: MEXT provides economy-class airfare from the designated international airport in the student's home country to Japan at the beginning of the scholarship and a return ticket after successful completion, subject to MEXT regulations.
Japanese Language Training (where applicable): For undergraduate scholars especially, one year of intensive Japanese language training is provided before undergraduate studies begin, accommodation arrangements during the preparatory education period vary by institution and are subject to university policies. Research students may be required to undertake preparatory Japanese language education if MEXT determines it is necessary before beginning their academic program.
No Repayment, No Work Obligation: There is no repayment required and no service obligation afterward—unlike some scholarships that require you to work for the sponsoring government or organization post-graduation.
