Student Loan for Germany: Education Loan for Indian Students to study in Germany
Studying in Germany is a popular choice for international students, and student loans can make it more accessible. It can help you cover living costs, tuition fees (if applicable), travel, accommodation, study materials, health insurance, and visa-related costs.
Here are the key reasons why students consider it
Low or no tuition fees, but living costs still add up
Many German public universities charge little to no tuition (even for international students in most states), but you still need to cover rent, health insurance, food, and a residence permit's "blocked account" (Sperrkonto) requirement.
Meeting visa/blocked account requirements
The German Mission in India currently states that an education loan is additional to the blocked account and that there are no specific loan-amount criteria set by the Consulate.
Lower interest rates on education loans
Education loans may offer more favourable interest rates or repayment structures than some personal-loan products, but the actual rate depends on the lender, collateral, loan amount and applicant profile.
Preserving family savings/investments
Instead of liquidating fixed deposits, property, or other investments, a loan lets your family's assets keep growing while you repay gradually after starting work.
Tax benefits (depending on your home country)
Section 80E covers interest on eligible higher-education loans, but the deduction is not available under the new tax regime.
Building credit history
Say responsible repayment may contribute to a borrower's Indian credit history/credit profile.
Covering non-tuition costs
Loans can also fund travel, laptop/study material, health insurance, and initial settling-in costs — expenses scholarships often don't cover.
Collateral-free options for smaller amounts
Availability depends on lender, scheme, course/institution, loan amount, applicant and co-applicant profile. Don't imply that all smaller loans are collateral-free.
Student Loans for Indian Students Studying in Germany
Many public universities in Germany do not charge general tuition fees for bachelor's and many master's programmes, although students usually pay semester contributions. Tuition fees can apply in specific cases, including at some institutions or for certain non-EU students.

Secured vs Unsecured Student Loans for Germany
Indian students planning to study in Germany can generally explore secured and unsecured education loans. Let's get to know the difference between the two.
Secured education loan: Secured loans may have lower interest rates than comparable unsecured loans . Public banks like: SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB and some private banks provide loans.
Unsecured Education Loans: In this type of loan, no collateral is required. But, it is based on the applicant's academic profile, university or course. But, the Lenders can also assess co-applicant income, credit profile, repayment capacity and other risk factors. Unlike secured education loans, in this loan, higher interest rates and faster processing are the features. Some specialised education-finance companies offer unsecured education loans, subject to eligibility and lender policy.
Scholarships and student loans for Germany: How can they be combined?
Scholarship and student loans can be together to finance higher education in Germany, but the exact combination depends on the scholarship terms, lender’s policy, and the student’s total funding requirement. Let's know how the combination works.
If your total estimated education cost is €30,000 and you receive a scholarship worth €10,000. But, it should be kept in mind that you should not automatically borrow the full €30,000 after receiving the scholarship. A scholarship can reduce the amount you need to finance through debt.
- Use the scholarship first: The biggest advantage of scholarship is that you don't have to pay it back. But, some scholarships may cover only selected expenses, so calculate the remaining funding gap before deciding the loan amount.
- Borrow only the remaining amount: If the scholarship covers part of your costs, you can ask the lender to finance the remaining eligible expenses.
- Check whether the scholarship allows other funding: Before combining a scholarship with a loan, read the specific scholarship's terms and conditions because not every scholarship can automatically be combined with another source of funding. Scholarship providers may impose restrictions on receiving another scholarship or other forms of financial support.
- Scholarships can also help with visa financing: A scholarship may also be relevant to the financial proof required for a German student visa.
The German Federal Foreign Office states that sufficient financing can be demonstrated through methods such as a blocked account, certain guarantees or qualifying scholarships.
- A loan can cover the funding gap: An education loan may be cover: Remaining tuition fees, Semester-related expenses, Accommodation, Living expenses and travel costs because eligible expenses differ by lender and loan
Student visa requirements after getting an education loan
After getting an education loan, there are many requirements which are needed in the visa application. Here is what needs to be submitted.
Education Loan Sanction Letter
Obtain an official sanction letter from the bank/NBFC stating the approved loan amount, student details, course/university, and key loan terms.
Loan Disbursement Proof
Useful where relevant, but the exact evidence required depends on the visa case and financial-proof route.
Proof of Living Expenses
A loan sanction letter does not automatically replace the required proof of sufficient livelihood funds.
Proof of Tuition Fees
If the university charges tuition fees, the German mission in India states that applicants can provide: proof that the tuition fees have been paid; an education loan covering the fees; or an unblocked deposit added to the blocked account, in addition to the required living-expense funds.
University Admission Letter
Submit the official admission letter showing the course, university and relevant study details.
APS Certificate
The dMAT applies to selected Master's applicants whose previous degree falls in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, for Summer Semester 2027 and later, subject to exemptions.
Academic and Language Documents
Prepare your previous academic certificates and the required language certificate where the language proficiency is not already confirmed by the university.
Passport, Visa Forms and Supporting Documents
The German mission's checklist also includes the passport, visa application documents, motivation letter/statement of purpose, CV and other required forms.
Education Loan vs. Blocked Account
A loan may be accepted as evidence for tuition fees under the German Mission's specified arrangements, but that does not mean the loan substitutes for the blocked account for living expenses.
| Requirement | Education Loan | Blocked account |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fees at a fee-charging university | May be accepted as evidence of tuition financing, subject to the visa authority's requirements | Can be used for living-cost funds; tuition treatment depends on the specific case |
| Living expenses | Loan sanction does not automatically replace required financial proof | Common route for proving living expenses |
| Current living-cost figure for India | Not a substitute for the required financial proof | For a German student visa, call it the current required first-year livelihood amount under the German Mission in India guidance, rather than simply “typically.” |
| Monthly withdrawal | Depends on loan disbursement and lender terms | €992/month under the current German Mission guidance |
| Loan sanction letter | Supporting evidence | Not applicable |
| Blocked-account confirmation | Some Indian education-loan providers may finance eligible blocked-account expenses, subject to the lender’s loan scheme and disbursement conditions. | Evidence that the required blocked-account funds have been deposited |
