• Early Childhood Education: In Germany, this stage includes day care centres and kindergartens, with age groups of 3 to 6 years. Although, it is not mandatory for parents to send their children for kindergartens and day care centres, nevertheless, it surely helps children in developing social, language and learning skills. The main purpose of these schools is to prepare children for primary school rather than providing formal education. Primary purpose of Kindergartens is to focus on: • Communication and language development • Creativity and play-based learning • Social interaction • Emotional growth • Physical activities

• Primary Education: In most German states, Primary education, also known as Grundshule, normally starts at age 6 and lasts for four years. In some states, it also lasts for six years. In primary school, students learn subjects like: • German language • Arts • Mathematics • Science • Social studies • Music • Physical education Students are assessed by teachers on the basis of their abilities and performance. Later, this also influences the type of secondary education pathway that follows.

• Secondary Education: This system is unique in itself, as, based on academic performance, interests and career goals, students are guided in different educational tracks. 1. Hauptschule This pathway focuses on practical knowledge, preparing students for vocational education and training. This pathway lasts until Grade 9 or 10, and students move into apprenticeships or technical careers after completing Hauptschule. 2. Realschule This pathway offers a balance between theoretical and practical learning. Realschule ends after Grade 10 and provides intermediate education only. After pursuing Realschule, Graduates can choose to: • Continue vocational training • Pursue further academic studies or • Enter technical schools 3. Gymnasium Academically strong students choose Gymnasium, a qualification which leads to Abitur. This qualification is required for university admission. Advanced subjects are taught under Abitur and students complete it up to Grade 12 or 13. This pathway is highly valued, since it opens pathways to higher education in Germany and other countries as well. 4. Gesamtschule Sometimes a student requires more time before deciding on educational direction or career. This flexible model supports students by helping them choose academic levels and future pathways. Gesamtschule is a combination of Hauptschule, Realschule, and Gymnasium in one institute.

• Vocational Education and Training (VET): Vocational Educational training system is one of Germany’s most attractive and strongest features. Germany is renowned worldwide for the dual education system which allows students to combine classroom learning along with practical work experience: • Students spend time studying theoretical subjects at vocational schools and • Work in companies as apprentices This helps students attain practical skills, as well as, simultaneously earn income and improve employability. Popular vocational training fields are: • Business administration • Engineering • Healthcare • Hospitality • Information Technology • Automotive technology Vocational system greatly contributes to Germany’s low youth unemployment, because students develop industry-ready skills.

• Higher Education in Germany: Germany has become a favourite study destination in Higher Education, amongst international students, reasons being; strong universities and affordable costs. Some of the Higher education institutions include:

• Universities: Focus on academic research and theoretical education. Programs pursued: • Bachelor’s degrees • Master’s degrees • Doctoral programs (PhD) These programs include various fields like engineering, business, medicine, computer science and social sciences.

• Universities of Applied Sciences: These institutions offer practical and industry-oriented education, and courses generally include internships and project-based learning. These institutions are specifically chosen by students who prefer applied knowledge and direct industry exposure.

• Colleges of Art, Film, and Music: These are specialized institutes that focus on creative subjects such as: • Fine arts, • Music • Performing arts • Architecture • Design Admission to these institutions may require portfolios or entrance examinations.

• Tuition Fees and Cost of Education: One of the main attractions for international students to choose Germany as their study destination is the affordability factor, as most public universities in Germany charge very nominal to no tuition fee at all for undergraduate programs. Students are required to pay a semester contribution that covers administrative costs and student services only. However, Living expenses still need consideration which includes • Accommodation • Food • Study materials • Health insurance • Transportation Before applying for visas, students are required to show proof of financial resources.

This is divided into 2 semesters:

• Winter Semester: Starts around September or October and ends in February or March
