dMAT Germany 2026: Eligibility, Registration, Syllabus, Fees, Results & More

dMAT Germany is a new academic aptitude test introduced as part of the APS (Academic Evaluation Center) verification process, jointly developed by APS India and g.a.s.t. (Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development). From 2026, the General Academic Module is being introduced as an additional element of the APS documentation and verification process for graduates of Indian universities applying for master's-level study in Germany. Most importantly, it does not replace the APS certificate.

Understanding the dMAT Germany Exam Structure

The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a new computer-based aptitude test, introduced around June 2026, tied to the APS certification process for Indian students applying to select Master's programs in Germany. Let's understand the entire exam structure.

dMAT has two main modules:

1) Core Module: Measures general study aptitude and cognitive skills; it contains three subtests designed to assess general cognitive abilities, and the official preparation materials identify areas such as figure sequences, mathematical equations and Latin squares.

2) Subject Module: Measures subject-specific knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge, and it is designed around problems and related questions rather than simple factual memorisation.

Overall Format

dMAT runs for roughly three and a half hours in total, split across two modules with a break in between.

Computer-based, at authorized test centres it is a computer-based aptitude test for applicants to German master's programmes.

The test is conducted digitally at designated g.a.s.t. test centres.

Important

For the 2026 introduction, the dMAT is being added to the APS documentation and verification process for Indian graduates applying for master's-level study in Germany. The official dMAT site says applicants intending to start in Summer Semester 2027 or later must take the dMAT with the General Academic Module.

Who needs to take dMAT?

For the summer semester 2027 and later, you generally need to take the dMAT if:

- You are an Indian graduate applying for a master's programme in Germany.

- Your previous undergraduate degree is in one of these fields: engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management.

- You need to go through the APS documentation and verification process.

Important

the dMAT is not mandatory for all Indian students — it's only required for those specific fields and intake, and everyone else is unaffected. Also, a low dMAT score doesn't automatically lead to a rejected APS certificate — it's an aptitude test, not a pass/fail exam.

Why has the dMAT been introduced?

The current APS requirement covers Engineering + Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics + Business/Management, not merely master's-level management programmes. Here are the reasons in detail why it was introduced.

- Assess academic aptitude in a standardised way across applicants.

- Evaluate cognitive, analytical and problem-solving abilities relevant to master's-level study.

- Complement the existing APS verification process rather than replace the APS certificate.

- Provide an additional, comparable measure that can help support the assessment of applicants’ academic preparedness.

How does the dMAT affect the APS process?

- The dMAT (digital Master Test) does not replace the APS process. Instead, for certain Indian applicants, it becomes an additional mandatory component of the APS documentation and verification process.

- dMAT certificate becomes part of your APS documents: If you are subject to the dMAT requirement, you must provide the official dMAT certificate as part of your APS procedure.

- APS verification still happens as usual: APS India will continue checking the authenticity and formal plausibility of your academic documents. The dMAT does not replace this verification.

- APS certificate cannot be issued without the required dMAT: You may submit your other APS documents before the dMAT certificate is available, but APS India can issue your APS certificate only after receiving and checking the required dMAT certificate. you: The dMAT certificate itself is issued separately by g.a.s.t., while APS India remains responsible for document verification.

It does not replace anabin or degree recognition: You still need to meet the existing recognition and academic requirements.

Who is exempt from taking the dMAT Germany exam?

As of 2026, the dMAT is not required for every Indian student applying to Germany. According to the official APS India guidance, the following applicants are generally exempt:

- Bachelor's PhD applicants — the dMAT is intended for eligible master's applicants.

-PhD applicants — doctoral applicants are not covered by the dMAT requirement.

-Master’s applicants whose previous degree is outside the specified fields covered by the dMAT requirement.

-Applicants taking part in officially approved exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programmes. master's—specifically, those who completed their APS online registration before 29 June 2026 or shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026.

Important

The dMAT requirement applies to eligible Indian applicants targeting Master’s studies from Summer Semester 2027 onward, particularly where the previous degree falls within the specified subject areas. So, if you are applying for a bachelor's or PhD, have a non-affected academic background, or fall under the 29 June 2026 APS transitional exemption, you generally do not need to take the dMAT.

Where can Indian students take the dMAT?

Indian students can take the dMAT at selected licensed g.a.s.t. test centres across India. For the first 2026 administration, the listed locations include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.

The final list of available centres and specific venues is confirmed during registration, and availability depends on the seats at each centre. For the first India test, the scheduled date is 26 September 2026, with registration closing on 15 September 2026.

How should students prepare for dMAT Germany?

Students should prepare for the dMAT Germany by focusing on the official test format and practice materials, rather than treating it like a conventional university subject exam. There are few steps which can be followed during dMAT preparation:

- Understand the test structure first :- The dMAT has a Core Module that assesses basic cognitive abilities. Depending on the route, a subject module may also assess academic knowledge and the ability to apply it to typical problems. The exam takes about 3.5 hours, including a break.

- Use official preparation material :- Start with the sample questions, solutions and solution methods provided by the official dMAT website. These are the most reliable resources for understanding the question style and expected reasoning.

- Practise logical and quantitative reasoning :- For the Core Module, regularly practise tasks involving patterns, relationships, numerical reasoning and logical problem-solving. Focus on recognising the underlying rule quickly rather than memorising formulas.

- Strengthen your academic fundamentals :- If your dMAT route includes a subject module, revise the core concepts from your bachelor's degree that are relevant to the module.

- Practise under timed conditions :- Once you are familiar with the question types, complete timed practice sessions. This helps improve both accuracy and speed, which is particularly important for a digitally administered aptitude test.
