Why Should You Choose Germany After 12th?
Germany has become one of the most popular study-abroad destinations in Europe for Indians as well as other international students after 12th grade. Here are the reasons:
Affordable Public Universities - Public universities in Germany charge little to no tuition fees, even for international students, at the undergraduate level. You typically only pay a small semester fee that often includes a public transport pass.
World-class education system—German universities are known for strong academic standards, research opportunities, and industry-focused programmes.
Wide Range of Courses - Students can choose from engineering, computer science, business, natural sciences, humanities, and other fields. Some bachelor’s programmes are also taught in English.

Strong STEM Opportunities—Germany is particularly attractive for students interested in engineering, computer science, automotive technology, AI, robotics, and related fields.
Path to Permanent Residency - Graduates of German higher-education institutions can generally apply after more than two years of qualified employment, subject to the other requirements.
Gateway to Europe—Studyingstudy abroad in Germany gives students the opportunity to experience a major European education and employment market, while also being well connected to other European countries.
Can you study in Germany after 12th as an Indian student?
Indian students can study in Germany after Class 12, but admission to a German bachelor’s programme is not always direct after the Indian Class 12 qualification. Here are some of the key points that Indian students require.
| Key Points | Description |
|---|---|
| Academic eligibility | Your Class 12 qualification must meet the requirements for the specific German university and programme. Depending on your qualification and academic background, you may need to complete a Studienkolleg (preparatory course) and pass the Feststellungsprüfung before entering a bachelor’s programme. From Winter Semester 2026/27, updated Indian qualification criteria include a minimum overall 70% of the maximum achievable Class XII marks for the relevant pathways. |
| Subject requirements | It depends on the degree. For example, an Engineering program might need Mathematics and other subjects related to science. Whereas other programs might need different subjects. |
| Language requirements | Studienkolleg admission generally requires German at around B1–B2, while the degree programme itself determines its language requirement. English requirements apply when the programme requires English. The accepted test and score depend on the university/programme. |
| APS certificate | For Indian academic qualifications, an APS certificate is generally required for German university admission/visa processing, subject to official exemptions. |
| Entrance requirements | Some universities or programmes may have additional selection criteria, entrance tests, aptitude tests, or restricted admission. |
| Finances | You need to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay when applying for the student visa. |
| Tuition | Many public universities charge no or relatively low tuition fees, but students generally pay a semester contribution. Exceptions include certain universities/programmes and non-EU tuition rules in some German states. |
| Student visa | After securing admission (or the appropriate preparatory-course admission), you need to apply for the relevant German national student visa/residence permission. |
What Are the Eligibility Requirements to Study in Germany After 12th?
- Class 12 qualification
- Academic marks
- Direct admission or Studienkolleg
- Subject requirements
- Language proficiency
- APS Certificate for Indian students
- University-specific requirements (entrance tests, aptitude tests, etc)
What Is Studienkolleg & Do You Need to Attend It?
Studienkolleg ("preparatory college") is a one-year program in Germany designed to prepare international students for university-level study when their prior education doesn't directly qualify them for admission to a German university.
Who needs it
You may need Studienkolleg if your secondary-school qualification is not recognised as equivalent to the German higher education entrance qualification (HZB). For Indian students, it is important not to assume that every Class 12 qualification automatically requires Studienkolleg.
How it works
A Studienkolleg normally takes two semesters (about one year). Students usually study in German and receive preparation in subjects relevant to their intended degree. Studienkollegs commonly require an entrance examination.
Main Studienkolleg courses are:
T-Kurs: Mathematics, science, engineering and technology
M-Kurs: Medicine, biology and pharmacy
S-Kurs: Language-related studies
G-Kurs: Humanities and German studies
W-Kurs: Business, economics and social sciences
How Can You Know If You Need Studienkolleg?
- Check whether your school qualification gives you direct university admission in Germany.
- Check your country-specific qualification assessment through the DAAD admission database/My GUIDE or relevant official resources.
- Check the requirements of your chosen university and programme.
- If you do not have direct entry eligibility, determine whether Studienkolleg or another recognised pathway is required.
